History Notes
Hello again =D I am going to be Samaritan and do some good deeds. Here are free History notes!
Thomas Jefferson (3rd President of the United States)
wrote Declaration of Independence
Contributed to the writing of Constitution of US
found Democratic Party
heavily influenced by Pilgrims(who wrote The Mayflower Compact)
Jefferson's Ideas
All men are created equal - Everyone should have the same basic rights
Democracy - People can elect representatives to rule on their behalf to ensure their rights are looked after. When they are unhappy, they can overthrow the government. Government should be "of the people, by the people, and for the people."
Right of Revolution - Right to revolt. If the ruler violated his people's rights/ could not ensure their securities, the people had a right to "alter/abolish" him. The British colonies were harming the Americans, thus Jefferson saw only a Revolution for Independence as a solution
Why Americans opposed the British Rule
The Proclamation Line of 1763
Taxation without representation - Taxes are $ paid to a government for a service they provide. But taxes were imposed on everyday items like newspapers, paint, glass, and tea. Thus, Americans were a lot poorer. They had no representation and had no say and could not take away the tax.
Navigation Acts - Americans were forced to trade with only British as King George imposed a lot of tax on other countries.
Boston Massacre - Britain used troops in Boston to maintain order. In 1770, the Red Coats shot at unarmed crowds, and Americans' discontent grew.
Example of Hatred against King George
Bouston Tea Party - Americans threw expensive Tea into the sea. King George imposed even more tax on Americans and closed down the Bouston Port. Americans became poorer as it was a place for trade.
American Revolution
American War of Independence
Started on April 19th 1775, ended on July 4th 1776
Jefferson's Contributions
Treaty of Paris - Signed on 1783 in Paris as it was a neutral ground. It contained the basic laws the country would run. Bill of Rights(rights to freedom of speech & religion) was also included.
Republicanism - No king, a government that is voted, that can be overthrown.
Louisiana Purchase - Paid $15million to acquire this land from France. It expanded the US's territory & power.
